Program purpose

The purpose of the program is to provide a basic and fundamental knowledge in the field of investigations of terrorism and explosives as well as shooting incidents and shooting reconstructions and solving cold cases. The program will illustrate the scientific principles and practical applications of these investigations to actual casework. The course of instruction is designed for investigators crime scene technicians, forensic scientists, attorneys and medico-legal investigators, and health-care professionals. There is no minimum educational standard for those who decide to attend this program.

Program objectives

Upon completion of this basic course on investigations of terrorism, shooting reconstruction, cold cases, and solving cold cases, students should:

  1. Understand the development, history, and investigation of terrorism, bomb explosion, reconstruction of shooting incidents, and solving cold cases.
  2. Understand the inherent limitations of these investigations.
  3. Be able to recognize, document collect, preserve, examine, and investigate terrorism acts, and explosives, shooting incidents and reconstruction shooting incidents and solving cold cases.
  4. Have acquired a basic and/or renewed understanding of the scientific method and principles of these investigations.
  5. Be able to recognize and interpret the mechanisms and fundamentals of these investigations.
  6. Have acquired first-hand knowledge of how to investigate these incidents and cases.
  7. Have an understanding of how to collect, preserve, document, the investigative materials and evidence in these cases.
  8. Be capable of investigating all the above areas of crime scenes.
